ADPP began, on February 17, the distribution of five tonnes of second-hand clothing to victims of the floods affecting the provinces of Maputo, Gaza, and Inhambane.

The launch of this distribution cycle was carried out in close collaboration with the National Institute for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction (INGD), at the accommodation centre of 19 de Outubro Primary School, in Boane district, where 480 families benefited. At this centre, 480 family clothing packages, children’s packages, and women’s packages were distributed, corresponding to one and a half tonnes of clothing.

In the coming days, similar actions are scheduled at accommodation centres in Marracuene district, covering the remaining quantity of the five tonnes made available in this phase.

At the 19 de Outubro Primary School accommodation centre, the largest in Boane district, memories of the devastating impact of the rains still remain. Olga Kongole was forced to leave her home in the 25 de Setembro neighbourhood, where she not only lost her belongings but also her small business producing and selling traditional beverages, which supported her family. “We are restarting our lives with the goods we have received from people of goodwill,” she said.

Another victim is Teresa Fabião, a single mother of three, who, in addition to having her home flooded, saw her recycling and solid waste sales business in Boane town interrupted. “We arrived here with only the clothes we were wearing, because all our clothing was swept away by the waters,” she stated.

According to Moniz Comboio, ADPP’s representative, the organization was deeply moved by the positive impact that clothing had on the lives of families affected by the 2023 floods at the same accommodation centre now activated for the current floods. “We mobilized once again to provide one and a half tonnes, corresponding to 480 packages for the same number of families. The remaining quantity will be distributed in centres in Marracuene district,” he added.

This action reinforces ADPP’s ongoing commitment to supporting victims of extreme climate events. It should be noted that recently the organization had already delivered the first five tonnes of clothing to the Mozambican Women’s Organization (OMM), corresponding to 1,429 family clothing packages intended for families affected in the provinces of Maputo and Gaza.
