Johanniter and consortium partners launch integrated response in Cabo Delgado. The activities are co-financed by the European Union’s Humanitarian Aid.
Johanniter International Assistance and its consortium partners Ayuda en Acción (AeA), Acted, and Associação Moçambicana Para A Ajuda de Desenvolvimento de Povo Para Povo (ADPP Mozambique) have launched a new humanitarian project to support conflict-affected and displaced communities in Cabo Delgado Province, northern Mozambique.
Nearly nine years after armed conflicts erupted in Cabo Delgado, humanitarian needs remain severe. Around 1,1 million people across northern Mozambique require humanitarian assistance, including 919,000 people in the districts most affected by the conflict in Cabo Delgado. Despite ongoing relief efforts, less than half of those in need have been reached, while humanitarian funding remains critically insufficient. As a result, many vulnerable families continue to face limited access to health care, food, education and protection services.
"In the face of persistent conflict, displacement and climate shocks in Cabo Delgado, our consortium is committed to restoring life-saving health, nutrition, protection, education and cash assistance to the most vulnerable with dignity, inclusion and care. We sincerely thank the European Union for its continued support, which enables us and our partners to reach people with integrated assistance when they need it most," says Morris Kolubah, Country Director for Johanniter in Mozambique.
The activities will be implemented in the districts of Mocímboa da Praia and Mecúfi, two districts heavily affected by conflict and displacement.
Health, nutrition, protection and multipurpose cash assistance activities will be implemented over the next twelve months, while the Education in Emergencies component will continue until 2027, ensuring sustained support for conflict-affected children and safe access to learning.
Kick of workshop in May
The project officially commenced with a three-day inception workshop in May, bringing together all consortium partners to establish implementation arrangements, coordination mechanisms and shared responsibilities. This was followed by official launch events at provincial and district levels, held in close collaboration with the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD), provincial sector authorities, and district administrations in Mocímboa da Praia and Mecúfi. Provincial and district representatives from the health, education, social action, disaster management and economic affairs sectors, as well as the Office of the Secretary of State, participated in the launch events, reaffirming their commitment to supporting a coordinated humanitarian response.
"This partnership demonstrates the value of bringing together international and national organizations, each contributing complementary expertise to deliver an integrated humanitarian response. By combining education, health, nutrition, protection and cash assistance, we are better able to address the diverse needs of conflict-affected communities while strengthening their resilience and supporting long-term recovery." explains Birgit Holm, Executive Director, ADPP Mozambique.
