Universities and communities together in the fight against climate change
The Higher Institute of Education and Technology / One World University (ISET / OWU) in collaboration with ADPP (Development Aid from People to People) held last Tuesday a Conference on Mitigation to Climate Change in Changalane, Namaacha District, entitled "Building the Resilience of Local Communities against the Adversities of Climate Change: Models and Lessons, the Changalane Specific Case."
The meeting was attended by representatives of the Government at national, provincial and local levels, national and international research and educational institutions, humanitarian / development organizations, representatives of local communities, students and teachers at ISET / OWU. Experts from Universities and Research Centers of the Universities of Stellenbosch in South Africa and the University of Lisbon in Portugal participated in the meeting.
The Conference was the culmination of 3 years of implementation of the "Cooperation project between higher education institutions for the promotion of rural development in Mozambique" funded by the EDULINK program in the framework of cooperation between the European Union and the Caribbean and Pacific countries ( EU / ACP), where the main challenges were: mitigating the impact of climate change on rural development, promoting food security and sustainable agriculture, promoting the use of clean / renewable energy, and the challenge of technology transfer and capacity building Of research and higher education institutions in promoting sustainable rural development.
The project was implemented with the active participation of the ISET / OWU students of the Community Development course with the assistance from ADPP. Among the actions supported by the students are the feasibility study of agricultural projects, actions in the area of renewable energies, energy and food security, introduction of pedestrian water pumps; Installation of irrigation systems; Introduction of fuel-efficient stoves, installation of seed shops and promotion of tree planting actions.
The conference provided an opportunity to share the results of the project, as well as to seek additional experiences from partners to help consolidate and expand the models of intervention on climate change mitigation in arid and semi-arid zones.
The invited institutions will be prepared to share their experiences, lessons and participate actively in the debate and the elaboration of an action plan aiming to raise the local capacity of resilience to the climatic adversities. The Conference will also serve to explore opportunities for collaboration and partnerships to continuously support the people of Changalane and other regions.
