School Feeding Project “Food for Knowledge” gathered over 150 school headmasters in Manhiça
A total of 154 Manhiça district headmasters, pedagogical assistants and Presidents of Primary School Councils covered by the School Feeding Project "Food for Knowledge", implemented by ADPP Mozambique, gathered at the premises of the Provincial Government of that municipality for the presentation of the report for the last Joint Monitoring of the Provincial Directorate of Education and Human Rights (DPEDH) and ADPP made at the 85 school feeding beneficiary schools in Manhiça district in September 2016.
As well, an awareness campaign for the "Socialization on Expansion of Bilingual Education in Mozambique" was brought up, inserted within the stakeholder consultation on the expansion of bilingual education and the enhancement of literacy in national languages Xichangana and Xironga for students of the first three grades of primary school, to be introduced in Project beneficiary schools implemented by ADPP Mozambique in coordination with the MINEDH by DPEDH-Maputo, as of 2017 academic year. This component was greeted with words of full acceptance from the participants. At the end of the work, the directors and the school council presidents pledged to sensitize communities to the importance of this action. Similar meetings have already taken place in the districts of Moamba, Magude and Matutuine.
This new component of the School Feeding Project "Food for Knowledge" will help create a strong environment of interaction between the teacher and the student, thus contributing to increase learning levels. To support this enhanced learning, many books are being produced and other materials to support teaching in the national languages XiRonga and Xichangana, that will be distributed in the beneficiary schools. In addition, training of 293 teachers in service is planned to implement the actions in the primary schools covered in Manhiça, Moamba, Magude and Matutine, a total of 269 primary schools covered by the project, benefiting a total of 27,800 children from 1st to 3rd grade.
The work of the District Meeting was chaired by Telésfero de Jesus, Deputy National Director of the Directorate of Primary Education, Raquel Damiao, Deputy National Director of the National Literacy Department and Eugénio Muianga, representing the Director of District Services of Education, Youth and Technology Manhiça, and Isaías Wate, Project coordinator.
The School Feeding project "Food for Knowledge" in Mozambique is a comprehensive initiative to nutrition and education funded by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), in the context of the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program, through Planet Aid, and implemented by ADPP Mozambique, in close cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Human Development (MINEDH), Cambridge Education and the World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH).
