Farmers Club Program reduces poverty levels in Mozambique

ADPP Farmers Club is a program with the main objective of giving the farmers in Mozambique the necessary tools to work their way out of poverty.

With the support from USDA, the ADPP Farmers Club Program has mobilized 11,500 farmers giving them the necessary tools to: increase their economy, produce sufficient nutritious food for the family, improve health and improve access to clean drinking water and irrigation. Farmers are organized in a Club with 50 members each. In these clubs, the farmers learn and practice new farming methods, better management of water and soil resources, improved access to markets and the implementation of actions aimed to improve the health of the farmer’s and their families.

During the baseline survey conducted at the beginning of the program in 2005, only 6.4% of the target population had sufficient food to supply their families with enough to eat. At the end of year 2, the food situation had improved: 33% of the households had sufficient food throughout the year.

In December 2007 only 1.6% of the target population had access to the rope pump water provided by ADPP farmers club and 14% had access to water from private wells. Now, 31.7% of the target population has been given access to the rope pump water.

Sucess History

My name is Beatriz Rafael Cuambe, member of the ADPP Famers Club in Mahubo 10, Maputo province.

Somebody from ADPP invited me to join the association in order to reduce poverty levels in my household and I agreed to join. Now you can see the produce I have managed to grow due to the training I received in the farmers club.

Before ADPP came I only used to plant cabbage and lettuce and the harvest was a quite poor, but with the arrival of ADPP I began to diversify my crops and I learned to establish a nursery, to give the required spacing for onions to grow well, to plant peppers, tomatoes, carrots, beetroots and to implement crop rotation thanks to ADPP.

After the harvest, I sell my products in order to earn surplus funds for my children. Part of the production is for my own consumption and sometimes I give it to my neighbors who do not have anything to eat.

Thanks to ADPP Farmers Club, my life has changed ….
